Why Are We Doing This?

Hello, and welcome to our new blog. It is a blog all about our family. It is a blog about our interests and observations. So, why are we doing this?

Both Amy and I have blogged before. I enjoy blogging. But, I found that my previous blogs had limited what I was able to say and write. One of my blogs was used to give my reflections as a pastor. My other blog was used to address issues from a Christian man's perspective. However, there are times when I want to share my thoughts without putting a Christian spin on things. Not every life experience is a sermon illustration. I felt restricted to addressing "faith" topics in those blogs. What do I do if I want to share an amusing anecdote about a family drive to the lake? Or share a great money-saving device I found? Or any number of other things? How can I share fun family anecdotes without turning them into a sermon? I needed another venue. Amy felt similarly limited with her faith blog as well.

So here we have what I hope is a fun and sometimes informative tale of Living Hale (yes, we named it that purposely). Sometimes our family is not Norman Rockwell perfect. Sometimes our life is crazy, messy, and maybe even a little unholy. I think it's important to write and share all of these aspects our life. One day, I hope my kids will be able to read this blog and our other blogs and respect two people who didn't have it together but who tried their best to keep it together for their children and their family. That's risky, I know. Some people judge us severely for being less than perfect. But, we're all less than perfect, even a pastor's family. I hope you read, laugh, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way.

That Time We Visited a Micronation

One of the great things about being part of a family is that we get to learn new things. Each person has unique interests. Often those interest grow or change over time. This is especially true with our kids. As their world of knowledge broadens, so do their interests. Our son has developed an interest in micro-nations. What is a micro-nation? It's new to us too. A micro-nation is a created country. Our son and his friend have discovered a few of these micro-nations online. The founders of the nations may create a currency or a constitution for their country. Of course, the micro-nations are not recognized by the United Nations or other official governments, however, they may be recognized by other micro-nations. How We Changed Our Mindset to Clear the Clutter

As the New Year bells chime our family has found those bells do not resonate as soundly as they should. Why? Because we live a life of clutter. The beautiful bell chimes are blocked by stuff. We are by no means hoarders. You can (in most spaces) clearly walk through rooms without fear of tripping over junk. But that doesn't mean that we don't have clutter. This year, we are making a valiant and concerted effort to clean the clutter. We have already started the process, and it is liberating. But, how did we get to the point where we are hemmed in and trapped by our possession rather than free? We have started to struggle with this question.
